Ontario Improving Access to Health Care in Georgina

New Nurse Practitioner-Led Facility Will Offer High-Quality Care Closer to Home

Office of the Premier

Ontario is helping people in York Region get the health care they need faster and closer to home with a new facility in Georgina led by nurse practitioners.

Premier Kathleen Wynne was at the Georgina Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (GNPLC) today to announce funding for the project. Once completed, a permanent clinic will replace the existing building with a brand-new facility.

GNPLC's new clinic will continue to serve more than 3,000 patients. The new facility will improve the overall experience for patients, provide space to offer confidential programs and services, and provide services to people who currently do not have a primary health care provider.

In addition to primary health care, the GNPLC will offer services and programs including:

  • Mental health care
  • Service coordination and referral to community health care providers and agencies
  • Chronic disease management programs
  • Patient education, health promotion and disease prevention programs
  • Palliative care.

Ontario is committed to supporting nurse practitioner-led clinics, a new model for delivering primary health care. These clinics provide ongoing health care, education and illness prevention across Ontario, often serving communities with limited access to primary health care providers. Patients can receive diagnosis and treatment for common injuries and illnesses, including prescriptions and blood and diagnostic tests.

Ontario is increasing access to care, reducing wait times and improving the patient experience through its Patients First Action Plan for Health Care and OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare -- protecting health care today and into the future.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario is investing up to $1.63 million to fund the construction of a permanent new facility for the clinic.
  • The GNPLC serves the northern-most part of York Region, including Keswick, Sutton, Jackson’s Point, Pefferlaw and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
  • Ontario’s health care budget in 2017-18 is $53.8 billion — a 3.8 per cent increase from the previous year. The 2017-18 budget for Central LHIN (which includes York Region) is $2 billion.

Kathleen Wynne

“People across the province should have access to high-quality health care in their own communities whenever that is possible. Nurse practitioners have the skills and qualifications to provide excellent care in a patient-centred environment, and clinics like this will mean shorter wait times for care and less travel for patients. Our investment in the Georgina Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic will help more people get the care they need faster and closer to home.”

Dr. Eric Hoskins

“Building the new Georgina Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic will help us increase access to comprehensive primary health care services for patients in the community. This nurse practitioner-led clinic will give people in Georgina and the surrounding area access to a variety of high-quality clinical services, closer to home.”

Dr. Eric Hoskins

Minister of Health and Long-Term Care

“The Georgina Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic is thrilled with the news of our funding announcement for our new location. Our interdisciplinary team has grown to provide outstanding health care to over 3,000 residents of Georgina, both on-site and off-site services. With full primary health care provided by the Nurse Practitioners, the team also provides access to specialty services from our Social Worker, Dietician, Registered Practical Nurse, Physiotherapist and Lab Techs, with support of an administrative team. Thanks to the generosity of the Georgina Community Health Care Council, we have had the benefit of working in our current location over the past six years, however this building no longer meets code for a medical facility.”
