Statement by Minister Lisa MacLeod on the Expert Panel Report on the Deaths of Children and Youth in Residential Placements
I would like to thank the Chief Coroner of Ontario and the Expert Panel for their report and recommendations. The effort that the Expert Panel has put into this report is commendable and I appreciate their dedication.
The Expert Panel's recommendations will help guide us as we address this urgent issue in a coordinated fashion.
The experiences of the children outlined in this report are heartbreaking. The death or suicide of any young person is a tragedy. My heart goes out to the families, loved ones and communities affected by these troubling events.
I want to make it clear that these deaths are unacceptable. We are taking action.
I look forward to working collaboratively with the Ministers of Health, Education and Indigenous Affairs to bring about swift changes. Together we are committed to addressing how residential systems can better support children. We also want to make access to these services and supports clear, simple and timely.
We have also engaged the Ontario Child Advocate in this work. We will also engage Indigenous community leaders, LGBTQ2S leaders, service providers, and youth with lived experience to improve residential services in Ontario.
We are committed to using the Expert Panel recommendations to bring comprehensive, systematic changes to Ontario's residential care services and to the broader child and youth-serving sectors.
