Statement From Solicitor General Sylvia Jones
TORONTO — Today the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Solicitor General, issued the following statement:
"The mental health and overall well-being of Ontario's everyday heroes in our police services are an important priority for this government. We are saddened by the heartbreaking suffering that too many officers and their families have experienced.
To better support those experiencing mental health issues and prevent more lives from being lost, an expert panel was established through the Office of the Chief Coroner to review the deaths of nine police officers lost in 2018.
My ministry has received the final report and is committed to reviewing its recommendations. I would like to thank the expert panel for its work in carefully examining the tragic deaths of these nine officers.
This work, examining the workplace culture of the OPP along with the external Independent Review Panel appointed in the spring, will inform how we can better support the mental health and well-being of Ontario police officers.
While this work takes place, we are committed to providing resources and supports for officers and their families. Together, with the internal supports offered by the OPP and their external partnerships with dedicated organizations such as Badge of Life, Wounded Warriors and Boots on the Ground, we will move forward collectively to support our dedicated frontline officers.
The brave men and women of our police services put their lives on the line each and every day to protect and serve the people of Ontario, and we are determined to do all we can to ensure they remain healthy and ready to serve."
