Inquest into the Death of Jesse Piney Announced

Dr. Bonnie Burke, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Jesse Piney.

Mr. Piney, 34, died in hospital on August 26, 2016, while in the custody of Correctional Service of Canada. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Piney's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last three days and hear from approximately 14 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex, Court Room B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. Geoffrey Bond will preside as inquest coroner. Rochelle Direnfeld will be counsel to the coroner.
